In August ZatzWorks flew to Akutan and Dutch Harbor with our Cineflex HD and helicopter to shoot Alaska aerials for NHK. Shirou Kagawa from NHK Enterprises is producing three programs about the geography and wildlife of the Aleutians, and ZatzWorks traveled there to help create amazing aerials of the land and wildlife. Outfitted with marine survival gear, we flew over dozens of feeding humpback whales and tens of thousands of shearwater– all feeding on krill. The images are amazing and the first ones will be broadcast later this fall. Our base was in Akutan, a fantastic little village near Dutch Harbor. Working in these remote areas can be complicated. There is no helicopter fuel available in Akutan– the nearest fuel is a one-hour flight away. It’s one important reason that our Robinson Clipper II is such a great machine for remote work. We use 1/3 the fuel of an A-Star, making logistic much, much simpler. A single load of fuel delivered by a Grumman Goose can last for one week’s flying for us. For an A-Star, the same amount would last for one long day. Match with our team’s knowledge of operating in remote Alaska, the Robinson makes it possible for us to capture amazing images on tight budgets.
